A new app designed to enhance safety for those walking and using public transport is now available across Manchester, promoting both personal security and sustainable travel.
The WalkSafe app, now live in Manchester, assists users in choosing secure travel routes while also allowing them to share their location with trusted contacts. The app alerts friends and family if users do not reach their intended destination, offering peace of mind for those travelling on foot or by public transport.
In addition to route planning, the app features a map highlighting safe spaces within the city, encouraging safer and more confident travel. The initiative has received strong support from Manchester City Council, recognising its potential to promote safety and greener travel choices.
Emma Kay, co-founder of WalkSafe, emphasized that the app is “an essential ally in helping us all enjoy our lives, go where we want, when we want, and do so in a safe and environmentally conscious way.”Kay noted that WalkSafe is “ideal for students, commuters, runners, and anyone committed to both safety and reducing their carbon footprint.”
Joanna Midgley, Manchester City Council’s deputy leader, stressed the importance of such initiatives in supporting sustainable urban living. “In an ideal world, everyone should be able to go where they want, when they want, safely and sustainably,” she said. “But until then, it’s crucial we implement measures to protect and empower our residents.”
The local authority has been actively working to ensure the city is safe for all, including collaborating with venues in the nighttime economy and providing training for staff, further enhancing Manchester’s commitment to safety and green initiatives.
