Manchester Central Library will host three days of talks and interactive activities dedicated to sustainability this week.

Green Together is an exciting event taking place at Manchester Central Library, open to all and free to attend. It begins on the evening of 22 February with talks from our researchers on a whole host of topics. From house insulation and fuel poverty to textile waste, plastics, and the infrastructure needed for greener cities.

Don’t miss your opportunity to ask questions to our friendly scientists and engineers to help you understand why sustainability is important in the world around us. All events are free and open to all. Register for your free ticket using the button below.

On Thursday come and listen to a range of talks about sustainability issues facing local communities:

17:30 – 17:40: Register and grab a seat for welcome and Introductions – Dr. Veronica Sanchez-Romaguera, Sustainable Futures Lead

17:40 – 17:55: Dr Thomas Van Laake – Greener Cities and Cycling

17:55 – 18:10: Hannah Charles – Social Housing and Sustainability

18:10 – 18:25: Alexandra Barrueta Sacksteder – Net Zero and Labels

Continuing over Fri 23 and Sat 24 Feb, there will be plenty of opportunities to get hands-on with climate-inspired activities and tabletop games.

Friday and Saturday explore hands-on with experiments and demonstrations

  • The future of energy and electricity.
  • Animal safari investigates soil animals and look at them close-up with our microscopes.
  • Microfibres and fashion – exploring the microfibres produced by the washing and drying of our clothes.
  • Thinking about waste and what happens to it.
  • We will be exploring the recycling sorting process as it can vary across the country with plastics playing a big role in our daily lives, from wrapping things to forming medical tools and toys.
  • Carbon footprinting activity where you can “shop around” everyday products and estimate the carbon footprint of your shopping basket.
  • Tabletop games to think about what we can learn about carbon, life, and chemistry from our global shared story. Where do we, as humans, fit in? How can we design things differently, so that nature and people can thrive?
  • How materials will play a part in a greener future.

Delve into topics including why soil matters, how small fibres find their way into the environment, and what the future of our electricity system will look like.
