Oldham Council is building its first large-scale, ground-mounted solar farm at Wrigley Head in Failsworth.

Fully funded by the Council, Wrigley Head Solar Farm is the first project to be delivered as part of Oldham’s Green New Deal, which aims to create local green jobs and training opportunities while delivering environmental and economic benefits to the borough.

The site is part of the Moston Brook Green Corridor. The project will show how renewable energy generation can complement ecological projects, demonstrating that it can work alongside nature and green spaces.

Cllr Abdul Jabbar MBE, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Corporate Services and Sustainability, said: “Wrigley Head Solar Farm is an important step for Oldham. It will generate renewable energy, support local jobs and training, and contribute to protecting our environment.”

The solar farm will be constructed over the next few months by North West-based contractor Vital Energi, who will use local suppliers wherever possible. The facility is expected to become operational in spring 2026.

Jim McMahon OBE, MP for Oldham West, said: “This project brings together renewable energy and environmental protection. It is a positive development for the community and the local area.”

The solar farm will use solar panels to generate approximately 830,000 kWh of electricity per year, enough to power around 310 homes. The electricity will initially be sold to a power company, helping the Council move towards greater energy self-sufficiency.

The project will also improve conditions for wildlife on the site. New trees and flowers will be planted, and security fencing has been designed to allow animals to move freely through the area.
